SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Toreros finished with a 9-0 run to win a hard-fought 63-52 decision over Portland Thursday night in West Coast Conference men's basketball at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Senior forward Isaiah Pineiro had 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Toreros, while sophomore forward Tahirou Diabate had 12 points to pace the Pilots.
The game featured four ties, 10 lead changes, and the Pilots trailed by just two points with 2:07 left in regulation, but Portland closed the game just 1-for-10 from the field and didn't score from that point forward.
The Pilots (7-21, 0-13 WCC) extended their losing streak to 14 games, while the Toreros (17-11, 6-7 WCC) snapped a three-game losing skid with the win.
Diabate had his second straight game in double figures with 12 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots in just 17 minutes while battling foul trouble. Freshman center Hugh Hogland also was productive in the paint, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
The game was back-and-forth throughout until Pineiro made consecutive baskets and senior guard Olin Carter III drilled a three-pointer to take a 51-46 lead midway through the second half. The lead grew to six points on a Tyler Williams triple, but Hogland followed with a spin and dunk to make it 54-50 with 5:19 left.
Hogland and Crisshawn Clark then both split a pair of free throws to make it a 54-52 deficit, but Williams converted a layup and the Pilots' struggled to execute on offense in the closing minutes. Carter III then hit the dagger with a three-pointer for a 59-52 lead with 40 seconds remaining.
Portland held San Diego to 41 percent shooting for the game, but finished at just 39 percent on offense and 4-of-15 from three-point range. The Pilots gained a 26-16 edge on points in the paint, but committed 14 turnovers while forcing just nine. The Toreros also had a 7-1 margin in second chance points.
Carter III joined Pineiro in double figures with 16 points, while freshman Finn Sullivan added 11 points off the bench.
Portland controlled the interior in the first half as Diabate and Hogland combined for 13 points, but the Toreros buried seven three-pointers in the first stanza to carry a 35-30 lead into the half.
The Pilots continue the road trip with a Saturday game against the Pepperdine Waves in Malibu, Calif. The game will have live video coverage on TheW.tv.
