PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland women's soccer assistant coach Dominic Doty is leaving the program to pursue opportunities outside of coaching, head coach Michelle French announced this week. Doty spent one year with the Pilots, who put together a successful first campaign under the guidance of French and her staff.
"I can't thank Frenchie, Associate Athletic Director Jason Brough, and Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam, and the rest of the soccer/athletic staff enough for how I've been treated during my time here," Doty said. "This is a class institution with great people and a bright future. I will miss all the players and coaches more than they know, but I know I am departing with the program in a good place and more importantly with even better days to come. UP and the women's soccer program will always be special to me! Go Pilots!"
"Dom's commitment to the program has been completely selfless and tireless," French said. "He is an incredibly genuine person who has positively influenced our staff and players on a daily basis. In his short time here, Dom has left a lasting impact on this program, whether it's on the recruiting front or in the development of our players. We cannot wait to see him up in the stands watching our games with his family in the fall!"
Doty and the Portland staff led the Pilots to 11 wins in 2018, which was more than double the previous year's total. The Pilots also exploded for 30 goals, nearly tripling the goal output from 2017. The Pilots were solid defensively as well as they began the season with two straight shutouts wins, which was a feat that hadn't been accomplished by the program since 2009. During one stretch last fall, the Pilots produced three straight shutouts (Sept. 16-23), going 347 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. By the end of the year, eight of Portland's 11 wins were shutouts.
Portland has already capitalized on that early success with the announcement of
two transfers that joined the program this spring, as well as
five other players committed to the program for next year.
A native of McMinnville, Ore., Doty was previously the head assistant coach at San Jose State. While at SJSU, Doty helped the Spartans reach the 2015 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, while guiding the Spartans to numerous program records. Doty joined the Spartans' coaching staff after four years as the head coach of the Linfield College women's soccer program, where he left as the program's winningest coach in history.
Doty will official conclude his time on The Bluff on Friday, while a national search for his replacement is already underway.
