Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Yale defeated Portland by a 5-2 margin in a non-conference men's tennis dual match hosted at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 10-5 overall, while the Pilots fall to 5-7 on the season.
Yale secured the doubles point with 6-2 wins at the top two positions. Pilot freshmen Sema Pankin and Issa Yoshida were leading by a 5-2 score at No. 3 doubles when the point was decided.
Pankin then recorded a straight sets win at No. 1 singles over Dylan King 7-5, 6-4. Fellow freshman Nicklas Oberg pulled out a three-set super tiebreaker for Portland's other win at No. 2 singles. He beat Ryan Cheng 7-6, 3-6 and then 11-9.
Freshman Eleftherios Neos pushed Arnav Dhingra to three sets at No. 4 singles, but came up short. Yale won the other three singles matches in straight sets.
"I think based on where our overall team health is we did okay today against a veteran team," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Sema had a very nice win over a guy who has been nationally ranked, and Nick played his best match of the year against a solid player. We will go at it again tomorrow, hopefully taking some of the lessons from today and battling again."
Portland will conclude its road trip when it takes on host Sacramento State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
