MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland pitchers Chris Clements, Christian Peters, and Connor Knutson combined to hold the Gaels to just one run on six hits, but it was enough as Saint Mary's prevailed 1-0 over the Pilots in the finale of a three-game West Coast Conference series played on Sunday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
Â
For the second straight game, the Pilots (19-14, 2-10 WCC) got the potential game-tying run on third base in the top of the ninth. But like Saturday, the Gaels (19-12, 6-3 WCC) left the runner stranded as they completed the sweep.
Â
Clements (6-1), who has been the WCC's Pitcher of the Week three times this season, was solid once again, limiting the Gaels to five hits in 6.0 innings. Clements struck out four, but he's unfortunately saddled with his first loss this year.
Â
Peters and Knutson continued where Clements left off, with Peters tossing another flawless inning of relief in the bottom of the seventh. Knutson notched a pair of K's in the home half of the eighth inning.
Â
Carlos Lomeli (5-2) went the distance on the hill for Saint Mary's to register the shutout. He fanned nine, didn't issue a walk, and scattered four hits.
Â
Joe Vranesh provided all the run-support Lomeli would need when he left the yard with a solo homer in the bottom of the third.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a non-conference game against the San Jose State Spartans on Monday afternoon in San Jose, Calif. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
