PORTLAND, Ore. – Yoeli Childs and Jake Toolson each scored 22 points to propel the BYU Cougars to an 85-54 win against Portland Thursday in West Coast Conference basketball action at the Chiles Center. JoJo Walker paced the Pilots with 12 points and Isaiah White finished with 10.
The Cougars (18-7, 7-3 WCC) remain tied for second place in the league standings with the victory, while Portland lost its eighth straight game.
Toolson was an efficient 8-for-10 from the field and drilled six of his eight three-point attempts. Alex Barcello added 17 points for BYU, while TJ Haws dished out eight assists.
BYU shot 51 percent from the field and converted 12-of-28 three-pointers. Portland shot a season-low 28.1 percent overall and was just 6- or-20 from three-point range.
The Cougars gained a 47-26 rebounding margin and 30-16 edge in points in the paint. The Pilots forced 15 BYU turnovers and had a 15-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.
White and Walker opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers to give Portland an early 6-5 lead, but BYU regained the lead for good on a Toolson triple. Later in the half, Haws buried a three to give the Cougars a double digit lead and BYU took a 43-31 lead into halftime.
Toolson opened the second half with another three-pointer and the margin grew to 24 points on a Childs layup with 17:11 left in regulation. BYU's largest lead was 31 points late.
Portland will travel south for a Saturday night meeting game at San Diego with a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be aired on the WCC Network and radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
