PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland libero Carey Williams was selected to the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team, joining a squad of 28 players from across the country. Williams is one of only four liberos to find a home on the roster after competing amongst 204 athletes vying for a spot.
"I am very excited and honored to get to train and compete at the USA training center this summer with some of the best in the world," said Williams. "I'm looking forward to learning and improving my volleyball skills. Also, I'm grateful for Megan and the University of Portland for giving me this amazing opportunity to participate."
Williams is coming off her finest season as a Pilot, leading Portland and the West Coast Conference in digs and digs per set with 523 and 4.89, respectively. Appearing in all of Portland's 107 sets, she was second on the Bluff in assists (90), tied for third in service aces (26), and earned All-Tournament Honors in the Springhill Suites Invitational and the North Portland Marriott Invite during the 2019 season.
"We are extremely proud of Carey Williams and her accomplishment on making the College National Team training squad this summer in Anaheim," said head coach Megan Burton. "Carey exemplifies all of the University of Portland volleyball standards of striving for excellence in the classroom, on the volleyball court, and in the community. We send Carey to Anaheim with pride and confidence that she will represent our Pilot community extremely well."
In the Fall, Williams will be beginning her final season on The Bluff, where she has a chance to climb to the top of the record books in multiple categories. Currently Williams is placed sixth in Pilot history in career digs with 1,382, 389 away from topping class of '92's Ann Pinkowski's 1,770. If her consistency continues, her three seasons starting will all finish within the top ten in digs for a single season.
The CNT Anaheim roster will train June 21-27 in Anaheim at the American Sports Centers where they will compete side-by-side with the U.S. Women's National Team as it makes final preparations for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
