EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team went 6-3 in singles on the opening day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Wednesday at the Student Tennis Center. Four Pilots are now one victory away from qualifying for the ITA Northwest Super Regional scheduled for Oct. 22-25 in Seattle.

Singles quarterfinalists and doubles semifinalists in the regional main draw will advance to Super Regionals. Pilot junior Sema Pankin is already a singles qualifier for the Super Regional.

Freshman Julien Penzlin, sophomore Nikolas Tvedt and seniors Eleftherios Neos and Issa Yoshida all advanced to the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Penzlin, the No. 4 seed in the draw, defeated Eastern Washington's Steven Paz 6-3, 6-2 in his collegiate debut. Tvedt pulled out a three-set win against Pablo Gomez Galvan of Gonzaga by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 margin. Yoshida and Neos defeated Will Jesser (Portland State) and Julian Worn (Seattle U) in straight sets, respectively.

Freshman Oscar Brown also posted a victory in his singles debut, defeating Nils Plutat of Portland State 6-2, 6-4. Brown fell to Rikuto Yamaguchi of Washington 7-6, 6-5 in his next match.

Leo Hibi won his opening match against Drew Dillon of Eastern Washington 6-1, 6-2, but dropped a three-setter to Seattle's Veselin Kiselkov in the Round of 32.

The ITA Northwest Regionals will continue with singles and doubles action on Thursday. The tournament draws will play out to completion with finals scheduled for Sunday.
