EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team represents three of the four doubles teams to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships after another impressive performance on Friday at the Student Tennis Center. Freshman Julien Penzlin also advanced to the singles semifinals with another victory in the afternoon after already qualifying for the ITA Northwest Super Regionals, which will be held Oct. 22-25 in Seattle.

Singles quarterfinalists and doubles semifinalists in the regional main draw will advance to Super Regionals. Pilot junior Sema Pankin is already a singles qualifier for the Super Regional and will now be joined by Penzlin, while all three Pilot doubles teams have also punched their tickets.

"Today went about as well as possible," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Three out of our four double teams are in the semifinals. Our freshman, Julien, had a nice win to reach the semifinals of singles tomorrow. We also had a couple of nice extra wins in the consolation bracket. It's really nice to see Julien and Oscar (Brown) come in and make a difference in singles and doubles right away. Everyone has competed well this weekend."

In morning quarterfinals doubles action, second seeded Pankin and Eleftherios Neos cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win against a pair from Gonzaga. Issa Yoshida and Leo Hibi then knocked off the top-seeded tandem from Oregon by a 6-4, 7-6 margin. Brown and partner Nicklas Oberg punched the team's final ticket with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 win against a duo from Washington.

The No. 3 seeded tandem from Gonzaga knocked out Portland's Nikolas Tvedt and Penzlin and will meet Yoshida and Hibi in the first semifinal Saturday. It will be an all-Pilot second semi with Pankin/Neos facing Brown/Oberg.

Penzlin pulled out a three-set win against Washington's Han Chih Lin in his quarterfinals single match by a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 margin. He will face top-seeded Sasha Trkulja of Gonzaga in Saturday's semifinals.

The ITA Northwest Regionals will continue with singles and doubles action on Saturday. The tournament draws will play out to completion with finals scheduled for Sunday.
