Portland men's tennis continued action at both the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles and the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday.
Issa Yoshida made a run to the semifinals of the SoCal Intercollegiate with an impressive win against San Diego's Will Davies before getting knocked out by the draw's No. 2 seed from host USC. The Pilot doubles tandem of Sema Pankin and Eleftherios Neos advanced to the Sunday semifinals with an 8-6 win against a pair from San Diego.
At the Gonzaga Invitational, Julien Penzlin and Nikolas Tvedt will compete for the doubles title in the top draw on Sunday morning, while freshman Oscar Brown teamed up with a Gonzaga player and will go for the doubles crown in the White Draw. Tvedt also picked up a pair of consolation singles wins on Saturday.
"Our doubles play has been really solid this weekend," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We have a team in the semifinals at USC and in the top-flight finals in Spokane. Singles has been a little bit more up-and-down. Issa has had one of the best runs of his career in the last couple of days. After two very good wins yesterday he came back with a solid straight set performance against San Diego. He didn't have enough left in the tank in the afternoon match against USC, but a very solid performance overall.
"Sema let one slip away today against Santa Barbara's top player. The guy is good, but Sema had some bad bounces go against him and couldn't quite capitalize when the time came. Leo Hibi and Nik Tvedt both had nice wins in the back draw of their respective tournaments as well. For Leo, being from Southern California and beating a UCLA player was special for him."
Both events conclude with Sunday action. Video and scoring for the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships can be foundÂ
