EUGENE, Ore. – Portland men's tennis won all eight of its singles matches in Saturday action at the Duck Invitational hosted at the Student Tennis Center. Freshman Oscar Brown and sophomore Nikolas Tvedt each reached the final of the singles Yellow Draw and will share the title, while Eleftherios Neos and Issa Yoshida have reached the finals of the doubles draw as well.
"Friday was probably our worst effort of the fall and today was one of our better ones," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "As a group we were not very mentally tough yesterday. We let line calls and officials and outside disturbances affect us more than they should. I feel like from the top down we did much better today. I feel like this group of guys has been one of our most mentally tough groups based on how well we did last spring despite being shorthanded and dealing with COVID. That's why yesterday was difficult to watch. Today proved that it was just a bad day. You can just never let that trend go in the wrong direction and I feel like we did a good job of that."
Neos and Yoshida started the day strong by knocking off teams from New Mexico and Oregon to reach the doubles final. They will face Oregon's Joshua Charlton and Jesper Klöv-Nilsson Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
Brown defeated Oregon's Avi Shugar and Tvedt knocked off Ryoma Matsushita, also from the Ducks, in a pair of impressive straight set semifinal wins. In consolation action Neos, Penzlin and Leo Hibi each won two matches on Saturday.
"Nik and Oscar won hard semifinal matches," Gross noted. "We are going to have them share that title since they are roommates and teammates. Lefty and Julien bounced back well from yesterday. They both made great adjustments from Friday and won two routine matches today each. Leo ended the day with a 6-4, 7-6 victory where he collapsed on the court after the final point from leg cramps, but it was a good effort. One more day of tennis for the fall season tomorrow. It will start off with Lefty in his second straight championship match in doubles, this time partnering with Issa."
Day Three of the Duck Invitational begins with doubles title action at 9 a.m. Updated draws can be found
