Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – Portland men's tennis concluded its fall schedule Sunday at the Duck Invitational hosted at the Student Tennis Center. The Pilot doubles tandem of Eleftherios Neos and Issa Yoshida came up just short in a tiebreaker in the championship match against a pair from Oregon, while the team picked up three more singles wins in the back draw.
Nikolas Tvedt and Oscar Brown shared the Yellow Draw Singles title at the event and each picked up another quality win in Sunday's extra matches.
"Lefty and Issa lost a close doubles final to a very solid University of Oregon team," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "It could've gone our way, but the margin is so slim at this level. We have played so much tennis in the last five weeks and today was a battle of attrition for all the teams. I think we learned a lot about our three youngest players in the last few weeks and particularly this weekend. Oscar and Nik (Tvedt) competed amazingly over the last couple of days. They both proved that they were the best two players in the second flight of this tournament."
Freshmen Julien Penzlin picked up a nice win Sunday against New Mexico's Arda Azkara in straight sets and also teamed with Tvedt for a comfortable Sunday doubles victory over a team from Oregon.
"Julien played probably his best match of the fall today against a solid New Mexico player," Gross noted. "We know we have gritty tough competitors in our veterans, and it was great to see the young guys step into that role over the last couple of days."
Portland has now completed the fall season and will begin preparations for the 2022 spring regular season which begins with a home dual match on Sunday, Jan. 23 versus Portland State.
"There is still a lot of improving to do before the spring season," Gross said. "We have some projects to go home and work on. This is kind of the time of year when guys can get ahead if they work hard and smart."
