Portland is off to a 1-2-1 start after being picked to finish third in the conference in the WCC Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior midfielder Luke Hendel and sophomore defender Delentz Pierre were both named to the All-WCC Preseason Team as well.
Last week, the Pilots tied the No. 11 Loyola Marymount Lions 0-0 at home. Portland created several chances on the day with 12 shots, but just couldn't find the back of the net. Jacopo Viola, however, put together an excellent match in the goal for the Pilots, tallying six saves in his first career start for Portland. His performance was good enough to earn him WCC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Bulldogs are 2-6-0 on the season after being picked to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason poll. They had one player named to the preseason team in junior forward Demitrius Kigeya.
In their most recent matchup, the Zags dropped a road match to the Saint Mary's Gaels, 2-0. Saint Mary's got an early lead with a goal in the 20th minute and sealed the win with an insurance goal a minute before halftime. The loss dropped Gonzaga to 0-3 in conference play.
The Pilots and Bulldogs have played 29 times since 1999. Portland leads the all-time series with a 15-9-5 record and have won the last four matchups. In their most recent match, Portland routed the Zags 3-0 at Merlo Field on Oct. 30, 2019.
After this match, the Pilots will head south to San Diego, Calif. to take on the San Diego Toreros. That match will take place on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m. Live video and stats will again be available at PortlandPilots.com.
