PORTLAND, Ore. – In their WCC opener, the Portland Pilots women's tennis team fell to the Bringham Young Cougars 7-0 in Provo, Utah. The loss drops the pilots to 1-5 on the season.
The doubles action went without much fanfare, with BYU taking the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to secure the point early. BYU would sweep the singles matches as well, but Portland didn't let them do so easily. Lela Daszuta fought to make the comeback in the No. 6 singles match after dropping the first set 6-1, but ultimately dropped the second set 6-4. Emily Soares put together a hard fought match in the No. 3 slot as well. Soares pushed Emilee Astle to an extra game in both sets, but Astle came out on top 7-5 both times.
The clinching point for the Cougars came in the No. 4 singles match. Marija Elenova fought hard but fell to Helen Jiao in consecutive sets 6-4 and 6-0.
Next up, the Pilots will travel to Seattle on Sunday, March 21 to take on the Washington Huskies. That match is set to start at 12 p.m. with live stats and video available at PortlandPilots.com.
