Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots could not find a groove offensively against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday and fell 7-0. The loss splits the series at 1-1, with the deciding game coming tomorrow.
Christian Peters took the loss for the Pilots. The pitcher held strong at the start but ended up having six runs counted against him as well as 10 hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
The Pilots struggled to get the bats going all evening, tallying only two hits on the day. William Kempner, the winning pitcher for Gonzaga, made life difficult for Portland at the plate, striking out 10 Pilots. Sam Brown and Ben Patacsil were the only Pilots to nab hits.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the second inning. After a sacrifice grounder from Grayson Sterling advanced all runners into scoring position, Gabriel Hughes – who pitched for the Zags yesterday – stepped up to the plate and hit another sacrifice grounder to bring a runner home and put Gonzaga up 1-0.
Gonzaga struck once again in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Guthrie Morrison hit a double down the left field line that brought in two runners, giving the Zags a 3-0 lead.
Peter Allegro took over for Peters in the sixth inning facing a tough situation. With the bases loaded, Peters walked Brett Harris and gave the Bulldogs another run. Portland would allow two more runs before getting out of the inning. Gonzaga led 6-0 with three innings to play.
The Zags scored once more in the eighth inning, with Sam Lund driving a ball to left field for an RBI single. The Pilots got a runner on base in the final inning in hopes of getting a rally going, but could not put one together. The Bulldogs evened the series with a 7-0 win.
The Pilots and Zags will play their rubber match tomorrow at noon.
