Pilots earn first WCC win of the season 5-2 over Broncos

PORTLAND, Ore. – Rimona Rouf earned her first singles victory of both the season and her career on Saturday to clinch a 5-2 victory for the Portland Pilots over the Santa Clara Broncos. The win is just Portland's second of the season and their first in WCC play.

The Pilots earned the doubles point for only the third time this year with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Iva Zelic and Emily Soares earned their third win this season in the No. 1 slot while Neli Sunjic and Rimona Rouf sealed it with a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 slot. Portland led 1-0 early.

Portland carried that energy over into singles, taking two of three matches yet again. Zelic earned her sixth win in the No. 1 slot in straight sets while Soares did the same in the No. 3 match. Sunjic almost clinched the win in the No. 2 match, bouncing back from a 6-0 loss in set one with a 6-4 win in set two. But after leading 5-1 in the final set, Finley Kalinic made a furious comeback to steal the No. 2 match and get Santa Clara a point.

The second set of singles matches followed the same pattern, with Portland taking the No. 5 and No. 6 matches on their way to victory. The Pilots secured the win in the No. 6 singles match. Rouf swept Lindsey Pesquiera in straight sets to earn her first singles victory of both the season and her career, gifting Portland the win in the process.

Next up, the Pilots will head to Malibu, Calif. to take on the No. 5 team in the nation, the Pepperdine Waves. The two teams will face off on Friday, Apr. 16 at 1 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live video and stat options.
