SAN MATEO, Calif.
– Portland junior shortstop Chad Stevens was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for April 12, 2021, the league office announced on Tuesday. Stevens had a monster week at the plate in leading the Pilots to a midweek win against nationally-ranked Oregon and a road series win at BYU.
The Fox Island, Wash. native finished the week 11-for-18, including a pair of four-hit games. Stevens the Pilots to a 6-4 win at No. 19 Oregon with a 4-for-5 effort against the Ducks. He scored two runs and drove in two more.
Stevens then helped Portland improve to 7-2 in WCC road games this year by taking 2-of-3 games at BYU. In the team's 5-3 series-opening win, Stevens was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and a walk. He went 1-for-4 on Friday against the Cougars and then spearheaded Portland's series clinching, 7-6 comeback win on Saturday by going 4-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Stevens is now hitting a team-best .353 and leads the WCC with 12 doubles. He is the first player to earn multiple player of the week honors this season in the conference after being recognized previously on March 23.
Portland (16-14, 8-4 WCC) will host a pair of Pac-12 opponents mid-week before welcoming the Loyola Marymount Lions to Joe Etzel Field for a three-game homestand. The Pilots and Washington Huskies meet on Tuesday at 5 p.m., followed by the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Friday's series opener with LMU is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
