SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots women's tennis team fought hard in doubles, but could not keep up with the San Diego Toreros as they fell 7-0. The loss drops Portland to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in WCC play.
The Toreros took the doubles point to start things off, but the Pilots didn't make it easy. They took early leads in the both the No. 1 and the No. 2 matches, with Iva Zelic and Emily Soares taking the No. 1 match by a score of 6-2, their second win as partners this season. Unfortunately, Portland ended up dropping both the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, giving San Diego the point.
The Pilots didn't challenge the Toreros as much in the singles matches. San Diego took all but one of those matches in straight sets, sweeping Portland. Rimona Rouf was the only Pilot to take a set, doing so in the No. 6 singles match before eventually losing. The clinching point came in the No. 3 singles match, with Abigail Desiatnikov defeating Emily Soares by scores of 6-2 and 6-0, officially giving San Diego the win.
Next week, the Pilots will be back home at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center for a pair of WCC matches against the San Francisco Dons and the Santa Clara Broncos. They'll play the Dons on Friday, Apr. 9 at 11 a.m. and the Broncos on Saturday, Apr. 10, also at 11 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com
