SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Portland Pilots men's tennis player Eleftherios Neos has been named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic First Team for the 2021 season. It is the second time he has earned such an honor. Two other Pilots also earned honorable mention: Issa Yoshida and Nicklas Oberg.
The WCC All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excelled both on the court and in the classroom. In order to qualify for the squad, a student-athlete must be a key contributor to their team while also maintaining a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
Neos was one of the top players for the Pilots this year in both singles and doubles. The Cyprus native was named All-WCC Second Team in both singles and doubles and won WCC Player of the Week back on March 30. He posted an 8-8 dual singles record at the No. 2 position in the lineup and was 9-5 in doubles with his partner, Yoshida, who made the doubles second team with Neos. The duo put together a seven-match win streak in the middle of the season.
Yoshida thrived in doubles with Neos and posted a respectable 8-8 dual singles record primarily in that No. 3 spot for Portland. In the final match of the season against Saint Mary's, Yoshida gave Portland the clinching point in dramatic fashion to push the Pilots to 10 wins on the season.
Oberg posted an impressive 11-5 dual singles record in the No. 4 position and a 6-2 singles record in WCC play. He ended the season on a five-match win streak and was named the U.S. Bank Student Athlete of the Month for his performance.
