Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland concluded a dominant weekend at the
Southern California Intercollegiate Championships with Sema Pankin winning the singles title and teaming with Eleftherios Neos for the doubles championship on Sunday at Marks Tennis Stadium.
Pankin defeated his second ranked opponent in as many days with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 win against No. 67 Phillip Jordan of UC Santa Barbara in the finals. Pankin knocked off No. 44-ranked Bradley Frye of host USC in Saturday's semifinals.
Ranked preseason No. 10 nationally in doubles, Pankin and Neos cruised to an 8-1 victory over UCSB's Luka Mrsic and Pablo Masjuan Sunday morning to win the tournament doubles title for the second straight year.
By winning the tournament, the players will earn Wild Card entries into a $25K ITF Futures tournament in California this March.
"We had as successful a day as you could possibly have on the final day of a fall event," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Lefty and Sema played their best match of the fall for sure this morning and Sema got his second ranked win in as many days. The guy he beat is one of the best competitors in college tennis and made him earn it every step of the way, which makes it even sweeter. I am really proud of him bouncing back after struggling in the last tournament. Both guys hope to continue with a pro career after the season so earning the tournament entry is a great jumpstart for them."
Portland concluded the tournament a combined 13-9 in singles and 8-2 in doubles against non-UP opponents. The Pilots will next take the court at the
Gonzaga Fall Invitational Nov. 4-6 in Spokane, Wash. Live video of all matches will be available at
