PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball has signed guard Vince Delano (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Compass Prep) to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Shantay Legans announced on Wednesday. Delano will join the Pilots as true freshmen for the 2023-24 season.
Delano (6-2, 170) currently attends Arizona Compass Prep, one of the top basketball prep schools in the country. Last season he competed for Phoenix Prep in the elite prep basketball circuit, The Grind Session. He broke the circuit record for most three-pointers in a game (10) and helped lead Phoenix Prep to the Grind Session Final Four.
"Vince is going to be a great addition to the Pilot Family," Legans said. "He is a skilled guard that shoots it well, makes plays for others, and understands how we want to play. I love guys you have to kick out of the gym and Vince is that type of player. He is driven and wants to be part of something special, so we are excited to get him to campus and get to work."
"I really believe in the coaching staff," Delano said of his decision to sign with Portland. "The things Coach Legans and his staff in just one year with the program is impressive. I love how they train the guys and players get better. I have a great relationship with Coach (Jeremy) Pope as well, so the decision felt like a no-brainer."
Portland opened the 2022-23 season with an 89-62 victory over Lewis & Clark on Monday and hosts Florida A&M tonight at 7 p.m. The Pilots were picked fifth in the West Coast Conference Preseason Poll, coming off a 19-win season during Legans' first season on The Bluff.
