SAN BRUNO, Calif. – After a stellar outing in his second start of the season, Portland Pilots pitcher/infielder Brett Gillis has been named the WCC Pitcher of the Week. It's the first time that he's won the award both this year and in his career.
Gillis was outstanding in his start against the San Jose State Spartans this past Saturday. He pitched six innings with no runs and only two hits allowed. He also added 10 strikeouts, marking the second time in his career he's eclipsed that double-digit barrier. He was the only pitcher in the WCC this week to go six innings with no runs allowed and 10 strikeouts.
The Everett, Wash. native returned to Portland after serving as a utility player last season. Gillis posted a 5.09 ERA with a 2-5 record. He was second on the team in strikeouts at 69 and ranked second in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings at 12.10. This year, Gillis is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA and is fourth in the WCC in strikeouts and sixth in strikeouts per nine innings with 13.09.
The Pilots are in the midst of a long stretch of road contests, with their next game coming this Wednesday against the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., with a link to live stats and a stream available at PortlandPilots.com.
