Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 18 San Diego Toreros picked up a 4-0 win over the visiting Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.

San Diego claimed a hard-fought doubles point to open the scoring. Portland's Nicolas Ocana and Julien Penzlin earned a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position, but the Toreros (14-2, 3-0 WCC) clinched with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.

The home side came out strong in singles winning the opening set at all six positions, but the Pilots (4-7, 0-2 WCC) battled back to make it interesting.

Nikolas Tvedt won his second set at No. 6 singles, Issa Yoshida was leading 4-3 and Sema Pankin pushed No. 5-ranked August Holmgren to a tiebreaker at the top of the lineup, but the Toreros held on.

"We actually had a very nice effort today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I know the score doesn't reflect that, but San Diego and Pepperdine are the two best teams in the conference and playing on their home court is a difficult task. I feel like we competed hard at every spot and could have stayed in the match for another hour if the ball bounced our way on a couple of big points. To San Diego's credit, they are just a very solid team."

Portland will remain in the area to visit San Diego State on Saturday in a non-conference match at noon.
