ABOUT THE PILOTS
• The Pilots are 30-18 overall and 16-8 in WCC play after sweeping the Saint Mary's Gaels in their final home series.
• The sweep gave Portland their ninth WCC win in a row and their third sweep in a row, their longest such streak in program history. It was also their fourth sweep of the year.
• The sweep also put the Pilots at 30 wins this season, making this the first season since 2010 the Pilots have earned at least 30 wins this season. Their 16 WCC wins is the most they've had since 2002.
• The Pilots also officially clinched a berth to the WCC Tournament for the first time in program history this past weekend.
• In the finale, the Pilots scored 22 runs in a 22-12 run, which was also their highest run total since 2002.
• The Gillis brothers, Brett and Brock, were arguably the most effective pitchers this weekend, dominating in their Friday and Saturday starts.
• Brett went 6.1 innings with only two hits and two runs allowed and eight strikeouts in his ninth win of the year. He's posted at least six strikeouts in all 12 of his appearances this season.
• Brett Gillis has been one of the best pitchers in the nation, posting a 9-1 record and a 1.52 ERA. That ERA ranks first in the WCC and third in the nation among pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched (seventh among all qualified hurlers). He's seventh among all qualified pitchers in ERA.
• Gillis's nine wins is first in the WCC and third in the nation. His 102 strikeouts is third in the WCC and 15th nationally and he is also first in the conference (12th nationally) in hits allowed per nine innings (5.61) and sixth in strikeouts per nine innings (11.92). He is one of only 21 pitchers with at least 100 strikeouts on the year.
• Brock went seven innings with only one run (not earned) and three hits allowed and nine strikeouts. His seven innings are a career-high as well as his nine strikeouts. It's the first time he's gone at least six innings with no earned runs allowed.
• Designated hitter/first baseman Trace Tammaro is the top batter for the Pilots this year with a slash line of .331/.575/.463 (BA/SLG/OBP). All of those averages are tops on the team.
• He also leads the WCC in on-base percentage and is fifth in slugging percentage and is third in batting average. He is also tied for 10th in home runs at seven.
• Among other notable offensive accomplishments from the weekend, Nich Klemp went 5-for-8 with a home run and six RBI's. He had three RBI's in each game are season high's.
• Gabe Skoro also had six RBI's in a 2-for-3 effort with a double last Sunday. His six RBI's were a career high, a season high for any Pilot and also the most RBI's by any Pilot since 2019.
• Christian Cooney also impressed, going 5-for-8 with a home run and six RBI's as well. His four RBI's on Saturday matches his career high.
• The Pilots are currently first in the WCC in hits allowed per nine innings (8.16), second in walks (215), on-base percentage (.369) and WHIP (1.34) and third in ERA (4.14), fielding percentage (.974) and runs per game (6.0).
• Among other notable individual rankings, Peter Allegro is first in the WCC and sixth in the nation in saves (12). He has 15 for his career, good for fourth in program history.
• Allegro had three saves just last week, helping the Pilots secure two wins against Saint Mary's after Portland gave up two grand slams in back-to-back games to bring it within three.
• Sophomore Sam Brown and senior Eli Morse were both named to the All-WCC Preseason Team this season. The Pilots as a team were picked to finish sixth in the conference in the WCC Preseason Coaches Poll.
• The sixth-place ranking marks the first time since 2003 that the Pilots were slated to finish in the top six. It's the first time since the conference also expanded to 10 teams in 2013.
• The Pilots return 28 players while adding 10 newcomers from last year's squad, including seven players who earned All-WCC honors last year. Seven position starters return along with 11 total pitchers.
• Morse returns after leading the WCC in saves last season with eight. He was among the nation's leaders in the category as well for most of the year.
• Morse is second all-time for the Pilots in career strikeouts at 288. He is tied for third this season in the WCC in wins at seven and is also sixth in strikeouts at 87. He is ninth all-time in UP history in strikeouts per nine innings (8.76) and fourth in career starts (44).
• Brown is batting .240 with six home runs and a team-high 29 RBI's.
• 2022 marks the seventh year at the helm for head coach Geoff Loomis.
• With 141 career wins as Portland's skipper, Loomis already ranks fourth all-time for coaching wins at Portland.
• Loomis is a Portland baseball alum and UP Athletics Hall of Fame member who still holds the UP program career record for batting average (.376).

• The Pilots went 24-26 overall last season with a 14-13 record in WCC play.
