SAN MATEO, Calif. – Portland Pilots right-hander Brett Gillis was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year, making the All-WCC First Team alongside Jake Holcroft as 10 different Pilots earned All-WCC honors. Peter Allegro earned All-WCC Second Team honors, six Pilots – Sam Brown, Brock Gillis, Eli Morse, Ben Patacsil, Trace Tammaro and Jake Tsukada – garnered honorable mention and Joey Gartrell made the All-WCC Freshman Team.
The Pilots had 10 players earn All-WCC recognition. That's tied with Gonzaga for the second most of any WCC team this season, trailing only BYU. It's the most honorees the Pilots have earned in a single season in program history.
Gillis – who becomes the first Pilot to ever win a major conference award – has been one of the top pitchers in the nation all year long. A semifinalist for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, Gillis has posted a 9-1 record and a 1.65 ERA across 13 starts for the Pilots. Both of those totals rank first in the WCC, with his win total ranking 10
th in the nation and his ERA good for sixth. Among pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched, Gillis is third in the nation in ERA.
Gillis ranks towards the top both nationally and in conference in several other categories as well. He is first in the WCC in hits allowed per nine innings (5.93) and WHIP (1.01). He is 17
th and 34
th in the nation in those respective categories as well. The Everett, Wash. native is also third in the conference (12
th nationally) in strikeouts at 111, ranks fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.18) and fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.83).
Among the other Pilots, Holcroft shined both at the plate and in the outfield for the Pilots this year. He's batting an impressive .339 with an OPS of .890 (.474 slugging, .416 on-base) and is currently third in the WCC in batting average. He's also seventh in on-base percentage and is tied for the team lead in steals at seven. Allegro has been one of the best relief pitchers in college baseball, meanwhile, leading the WCC in saves at 13. That total was also fourth in the nation.
Among the honorable mention winners, Brock Gillis and Morse were both solid weekend starters, with Brock posting a 4-4 record with a 4.48 ERA. In conference play alone, Brock was 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA. Morse moved to second all-time in UP history in strikeouts with 291, 90 of those coming this season (sixth in the WCC). He helped the Pilots earn seven wins – tied for fourth in the WCC –and posted a 4.28 ERA.
The sluggers on the squad were Tammaro and Brown. Tammaro has the highest OPS in the conference at 1.038 (.575 slugging, .463 on-base), leading the conference in on-base percentage and ranking third in slugging. His .331 batting average is also sixth. Brown leads the Pilots in RBI's with 29 on the year and also added six home runs. Tsukada and Patacsil are both solid hitters and defenders in the infield, both batting .269 and ranking second and third respectively on the team in assists.
Lastly, Gartrell was arguably the best freshman for this Portland squad during the regular season on the mound . He held a 4-1 record with a 4.05 ERA. His 25 appearances were the most of any Pilot this season.
It's been a historic year for the Pilots, who finished the season with a 31-21 record overall and a 17-10 record in WCC play. The 31 wins marks just the fourth time in program history the Pilots have won at least 30 games in a season, and it's also the most wins they've had since 2010. At 17-10, the Pilots officially own their best record ever in WCC play, holding at one point a 10-game WCC win streak.
The Pilots will be in Stockton, Calif. for the WCC Tournament this week for the first time in program history. They earned a bye after finishing second in the WCC in the regular season, their highest ever finish. The tournament runs from May 25 through May 28. They'll play the second-lowest advancing seed in the tournament on Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and streaming information.
