SAN MATEO, Calif. – Pilot baseball right-handed pitcher Brett Gillis has been named the WCC Pitcher of the Week after a stellar start on the mound for the Pilots this past Friday. This is the second time this season he's won the award.
Gillis pitched eight shutout innings against the Santa Clara Broncos in a 9-0 win, allowing only two hits and fanning 10 batters with only one walk. It's the fourth time this season that Gillis has posted at least 10 strikeouts in a
game and the second time he's gone at least seven innings with no runs allowed.
The Everett, Wash. native has been one of the best pitchers in the nation this season, posting an impressive 8-1 record with an ERA of 1.40. He leads the WCC in ERA and is seventh nationally, including third among pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched. He is the only player in the nation with an ERA under 2.00 that has gone at least 70 innings.
In other categories, Gillis's eight wins is also tied for first in the conference and ninth in the nation. His 94 strikeouts is good for third in the WCC and 16
th nationally, and he is also first in the conference in hits allowed per nine innings (5.86), fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.92) and sixth in strikeouts per nine innings (11.97).
The Pilots have a busy week ahead with five games in six days starting on Tuesday. They'll take on the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers that day in the final showdown of the season between the two teams in Corvallis.
