Portland radio play-by-play announcer Jason Swygard swung by a summer practice and chatted with newcomers Wyatt Lowell and Joey St. Pierre in the latest
Portland Pilots Podcast.
Lowell signed with the Pilots this spring after a successful season helping Snow College JC reach the national tournament. The previous Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year at Utah Valley, Lowell transferred to BYU but was hampered by injuries before bouncing back at Snow.
St. Pierre is a grad transfer from Milwaukee that will provide size and physicality for the Pilots. The 6-10, 255-pound center started 30 games for the Panthers last season and averaged 6.3 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game. He shot an efficient 59 percent from the field – seventh best in program history – and was second in the Horizon League with 1.4 blocked shots per game.
The Pilots return the top seven scorers from the 19-win team under first year head coach Shantay Legans. Portland recorded the
first postseason win at the NCAA level and matched the fourth-most wins in a season since joining the Division I ranks in 1958. Other highlights included a
road win against NCAA Tournament participant San Francisco, a 7-7 West Coast Conference record, and a six-game win streak late in the season.
Lowell and St. Pierre are part of an exciting group of newcomers that also includes transfers
Alden Applewhite,
Vukasin Masic, along with freshmen
Bol Dengdit and
Juan Sebastian Gorosito.
