PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball has added another experienced transfer as former Maine guard Vukasin Masic has signed a financial aid agreement, head coach Shantay Legans announced on Thursday. Masic will have three years of eligibility upon arriving to campus this summer.
"Vuk was a highly sought-after player in the transfer portal," Legans said. "He can really shoot it, but also has the ability to make plays off the dribble and get to the rim. He has great vision as a passer and is a pretty good athlete as well. We think Vuk will be a perfect fit for our style of play and our fans are going to really enjoy watching him compete."
The 6-5, 205-pound guard began his collegiate career at Hofstra as a true freshman for the 2020-21 season. After a coaching change, he transferred to Maine where he started 25 games and averaged 9.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for the Black Bears. Masic knocked down a team-high 46 three-pointers while shooting 35.4 percent from beyond the arc and shot 85.2 percent at the free throw line.
He erupted for a career-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting and 5-for-10 from three-point range against New Hampshire on Jan. 24. Masic drilled at least one triple in 24 of the 28 games in which he appeared.
The Belgrade, Serbia native entered the transfer portal after a coaching change with the Black Bears. Masic attended Hoosac School in Hoosick, N.Y. and averaged 21 points, six rebounds and six assists per game as a senior. He was also a member of the Serbian National Team at the 2019 FIBA Under-18 European Championships where he averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in six games.
Masic joins Milwaukee's
Joey St. Pierre as the second transfer this week to sign with the Pilots. They join incoming freshmen
Bol Dengdit and
Juan Sebastian Gorosito as the newest members of the 2022-23 roster.
The Pilots are returning the top six scorers and all major contributors from the 19-win team that Legans put together for his first year on The Bluff. Portland recorded the
first postseason win at the NCAA level and matched the fourth-most wins in a season since joining the Division I ranks in 1958. Other highlights included a
road win against NCAA Tournament participant San Francisco, a 7-7 West Coast Conference record, and a six-game win streak late in the season.
