PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball signed guard Juan Sebastian Gorosito to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Shantay Legans announced on Thursday. Gorosito is from Ceres, Argentina and spent the 2021-22 season at Denver Prep Academy in Denver, Colo.
"Juanse is going to be a fun player to watch," Legans said. "He is a highly skilled guard with unlimited shooting range and a great feel on the court. Juanse is tough, plays with great energy, is not afraid to mix it up and has a lot of swagger to his game. He is an excellent passer and fits well into how we want to play."
Gorosito (6-1) has been a member of the Argentinian Youth National Team system and began his club basketball career with Central Argentina Olimpico de Ceres.
He moved and played for Moravian Prep (Hudson, N.C.) from 2019-21 and completed with Upward Stars on the AAU circuit. He spent the 2021-22 season at Denver Prep Academy before returning to CAO de Ceres last month and has appeared in five games in Argentina's top division this season.
Jonathan Givony (
@DraftExpress) said this about Gorosito after seeing him in-person:
"The Argentinean guard is a highly productive and entertaining point guard. He outplayed a number of highly touted four- and five-star recruits in my viewings. He looks like a good bet to emerge as a star at the college level and could very well be the type of player who could carry a mid-major team to a win or two in the NCAA tournament. He handles the ball on a string and gets virtually anywhere he wants with his quickness and shiftiness, making high-level reads and passes off a live dribble at times thanks to his advanced feel for the game. Wired to score, he has range that extends almost to half court, regularly pulling up off the bounce with a glimmer of daylight, showing outstanding mechanics and touch, making him a very difficult cover even for the best defenders he encountered."
Gorosito joins fellow incoming freshman Bol Dengdit as the first two members of the 2022 recruiting class for the Pilots.
Dengdit competed for the Australian Senior National Team in FIBA World Cup Qualifying earlier this year and is a member of the NBA Academy.
The Pilots are set to return the top six scorers and all major contributors from the 19-win team that Legans put together for his first year on The Bluff. Portland recorded the
first postseason win at the NCAA level and matched the fourth-most wins in a season since joining the Division I ranks in 1958. Other highlights included a
road win against NCAA Tournament participant San Francisco, a 7-7 West Coast Conference record, and a six-game win streak late in the season.
