LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Portland's volleyball and beach volleyball programs have earned United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (USMC/AVCA) Team Academic awards, the organization announced on Monday.
It is the seventh time the indoor program has earned the honor and the second time the beach program has done so. Both programs have now been recognized each of the last two seasons.
The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award is given to programs that maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 or higher on a 5.0 scale. Portland's indoor and beach programs posted a combined GPA of 3.45.
The Pilots had several student-athletes earn all-academic recognition as well from the West Coast Conference. Four indoor players – Chelsey Harmon, Noelani Helm, Jiana Lawson and Grace Zilbert – earned WCC All-Academic honorable mention while Sarah Strong made the All-Academic team for beach. Zilbert and Helm also earned honorable mention for beach.
