The Pilots will welcome a basketball powerhouse to Portland when the Stanford Cardinal come to the Chiles Center on Nov. 13. The Cardinal have been historically one of the best programs in the country under head coach Tara VanDerveer, who led the Cardinal to national championship titles in 1990, 1992 and 2021. Stanford advanced to NCAA Final Four in the tournament last season, posting a 32-4 overall record and a 16-0 Pac-12 record to finish first in the conference.
Portland plays Washington State for the first time since the 2010-11 season on Wednesday, Dec. 7, while the Pilots also host crosstown rival Portland State on Saturday, Dec. 10 in the first game of a doubleheader followed by the Portland men against New Orleans.
The first chance to catch the Pilots in person will be when they host Warner Pacific in an exhibition on Nov. 2. Following that, the Pilots will officially open the regular season at the Chiles Center against the Willamette Bearcats in a doubleheader with the men's team, who will play Lewis & Clark College. The women's team will play at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
The Pilots will partake in another doubleheader two days later on Nov. 9. The women will play against the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine while the men will take on Florida A&M, with the women once again playing at 5 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m. The Pilots played the Rainbow Wahine last season, beating them 91-77 in Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine also made the NCAA Tournament last season after winning the Big West Tournament, losing to the No. 2 seed Baylor Bears in the first round.
After their homestand, the Pilots will head down to Southern California to take on a pair of San Diego-based teams in the San Diego State Aztecs and the UC San Diego Tritons. Portland will play the Aztecs on Nov. 18 and the Tritons on Nov. 20. The Pilots played the Tritons last season in their season opener, defeating them 91-48.
Portland will travel across the country for Thanksgiving weekend, playing in the St. Pete Showcase in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Pilots will play the Houston Cougars on Nov. 24 followed by the Northeastern Huskies on Nov. 26. The University of Florida and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay are also part of the tournament, but the Pilots will not play either team. Houston, like the Pilots, made the WNIT last season, advancing to the Sweet 16 before falling to Alabama.
After the road trips, the Pilots will be back in Oregon, taking on the Evergreen State Geoducks – who they beat 97-49 – on Nov. 30 in Portland before heading down to Eugene to play the Oregon Ducks on Dec. 3. The Ducks and Pilots also played last season, with Oregon narrowly defeating the Pilots 62-59 at the Chiles Center. Oregon was consistently ranked in several Top 25 polls, posting a 20-12 record and making the NCAA Tournament for the fifth season in a row.
The West Coast Conference slate will begin on Dec. 17, with the matchups yet to be announced.
Last season was a historic one for the Pilots. They finished 20-11 overall to earn 20 wins for just the fifth time in program history as an NCAA Division I school and post their best record since the 1996-97 season. They also earned a bid to the WNIT, beating the Colorado State Rams at the Chiles Center for their first ever home playoff victory and first ever WNIT win. The Pilots earned their second top-five finish in the WCC under head coach Mike Meek and advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Tournament.
