PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots men's soccer team will take on the No. 5 Oregon State Beavers in their second of three exhibitions before the start of the regular season. The two teams will play on Monday, Aug. 15 here at Merlo Field at 6 p.m.
The Pilots defeated the Southern Oregon Raiders 3-1 in their first exhibition game. The Pilots were tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the WCC, being picked first in the annual WCC Preseason Coaches Poll. They also had two players named to the WCC Preseason Team in midfielder Jake Arteaga and goalkeeper George Tasouris. A total of 19 players return from last season, with nine newcomers joining Portland.
The Pilots are coming off another successful 2021 campaign, finishing tied for third in the WCC with an 11-7-1 record. They made the NCAA Tournament last season for the third time under head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt, advancing to the second round after beating the Seattle U Redhawks 3-2 at home. th in their final 2021 Top 25 poll. They return four of their seven All-WCC honorees in Arteaga, Tasouris, Delentz Pierre and Sebastian Nava.
The Oregon State Beavers are coming off their best season in program history. In 2021, they won their first ever Pac-12 title and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to the Washington Huskies. They are ranked fifth in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
After Monday, Portland will play their final exhibition before the start of the 2022 season this Friday at Merlo Field against the Washington Huskies. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
