Former men's basketball standout and University of Portland Athletics Hall of Fame member Cincinnatus (Cincy) Powell passed away on January 9 at the age of 80 in his hometown of Dallas, Texas.
Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Cincy attended McKinley High School before accepting a basketball scholarship at Portland and making the trek west.
A three-year lettermen for the Pilots, he was named the team's most inspirational player in 1963 and 1964 and was the team MVP in 1965. Cincy averaged 17.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game as a senior and garnered UPI honorable mention All-America status. He still ranks No. 5 on the Portland charts in career rebounds per game (9.5).
Cincy was drafted in the eighth round of the 1965 NBA Draft by the St. Louis Hawks before moving on to an accomplished eight-year career in the
American Basketball Association (ABA). A two-time ABA All-Star, Cincy concluded his career with averages of 16.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
He was inducted into the UP Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 1992 Induction Class.
