LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland grad transfer Luka Vukovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draws in both singles and doubles following Friday action at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships.
Vukovic and Nikolas Tvedt teamed up for a Round of 16 doubles win against a Cal Poly duo in the morning. Vukovic then won a pair of three set matches in the afternoon to move on in singles. He defeated Han-Chih Lin of Washington by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 margin and then knocked off UC Irvine's Noah Zamora 6-7, 7-6, 6-4.
The Pilots had four other players in the main singles draw after a successful Thursday qualifying, but only Vukovic could move on. He will face Jerry Barton of SMU in Saturday's quarterfinals. While the Pilot doubles team takes on a pair from Rice Saturday morning.
"Every day a tournament progresses it becomes more and more difficult to advance," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We had some battles today, but only won a couple of them. Luka did an amazing job getting through a couple of close ones to get to the quarters. Our other guys lost to two Arizona players, and one USC player. The competition is tough this year, and I feel like it was a good test today. I don't think we necessarily failed the test, more just learned what we need to do to get better. It was very exciting to see Luka compete really well in only his second tournament as a Pilot."
Action continues Saturday and the tournament will conclude with final rounds on Sunday. Complete draws and results will be updated
here throughout the tournament.
