LAKEWOOD, Wash. – The Portland Pilots rowing team picked up three wins in their first action of the fall season, doing so at the American Lake Fall Classic.
"This was a strong start to fall racing," Portland head coach Gulliver Scott said. "Our more experienced boats raced with great poise and control, while our younger athletes also performed well and gained valuable experience."
Five boats raced today at the event, with Portland's two varsity eight boats each earning victories. Portland had three varsity four boats racing, finishing first, third and fifth respectively.
"Today was a great start to the season," Pilot co-captain Lauren Poehlmann. "The results are promising and show our commitment to team goals and eagerness to see our hard work pay off on the race course."
The first varsity eight defeated Seattle Pacific and Puget Sound with a time of 18:55.4. Dawon Lee was the coxswain for the top varsity squad while Megan Duifhuis was the stroke. The second varsity eight beat the same squads with a time of 20:05.8, with Leahbelle Paladino as the coxswain and Isabella Honig as the stroke.
Paladino was the coxswain for two winning boats today in her Pilot debut, guiding the top finishing Pilot boat with Megan Duifhuis as the stroke to a win in the varsity four race. Clarissa Gutierrez was the coxswain for Portland's third-place finishing boat with Gabriela Garcia as the stroke while Dawon Lee coxswained Portland's fifth-place boat with Isabella Honig as the stroke.
The Pilots will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 29 for the Portland Fall Classic at Vancouver Lake. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
