SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – McKelle Meek and MJ Bruno were named to the 2023 WCC All-Academic First Team for the first time in their respective careers on Tuesday. Five other players also earned honorable mention: Maisie Burnham, Lucy Cochrane, Alex Fowler, Kelsey Lenzie and Emily Sewell.
The WCC All-Academic team consists of student-athletes who have excelled both on and off the court. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must have played in at least 50% of the team's games as an important reserve or starter and must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Meek holds a 3.87 GPA as an accounting major at Portland. She has played in 27 of a possible 29 games and has started the last 10 games. She is averaging 5.1 points and 2.9 assists per game, with her 78 assists being second on the Pilots and tied for 10
th in the conference.
Bruno holds the highest GPA of any Pilot at 3.92 as a social work major. One of Portland's top defenders, she has played in 22 games this season off the bench, averaging 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and just under a steal per game.
This year has been one of the best and program history for Portland. At 21-8 overall and 15-3 in WCC play, the Pilots posted their best regular season record since the 1996-97 season and their highest conference win total ever. It is the sixth time
in program history the Pilots have earned 20 wins or more and the third time under head coach Michael Meek.
The Pilots finished the regular season second in the WCC and have earned a bye straight to the semifinals of the 2023 University Credit Union West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena. They will play on Monday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
