SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots nearly swept the WCC Player of the Week awards this week, with Jake Holcroft being named Player of the Week and Jacob Dobmeier earning WCC Co-Pitcher of the Week. It is the first time Dobmeier has won the award and the second time Holcroft has done so.
Holcroft earned the honor after batting an impressive .647 across four games, accumulating 11 hits, a homer and six RBI's in the process. He had the most hits of any WCC player this past week and totaled nine hits in WCC games alone. Holcroft has been one of the top batters in the WCC this season, ranking second in the conference in total hits (31) and hits per game (1.63), third in batting average and total bases (51) and fifth in slugging percentage (.638). He is also third-toughest batter to strike out in the WCC this year, doing so only once every 13.3 at-bats.
Dobmeier was marvelous in relief last weekend, earning three saves in three games in Portland's sweep of the Pepperdine Waves. He was the only WCC pitcher to post multiple saves and had more saves on the weekend than any other WCC pitcher had posted this season. He allowed no runs and only four hits with no walks in his three appearances. He is first in the conference and saves and fifth in the nation, with the four players ahead of him all tied at six saves.
The Bluff Boys off to a strong start in WCC play, currently holding the best record at 13-6 overall and 3-0 in WCC play. They have the most wins of any WCC team at 13 and are one of only two teams to sweep the weekend, sweeping Pepperdine for the first time since 2010. They currently lead the conference in batting average (.315), hits (205), runs per game (7.4), total runs (141), on-base percentage (.413), doubles (47), doubles per game (2.47) and hit by pitch (33).
The Pilots will travel to Corvallis for their next contest, taking on the Oregon State Beavers tomorrow, March 21 at 5:35 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
