TEMPE, Ariz. – The Portland men's and women's tennis programs are represented in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings with Sema Pankin maintaining his spot at No. 100 in men's singles, while Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge broke into the rankings in women's doubles for the first time at No. 84.
Pankin has held his ranking at No. 100 for the last month. He is the third highest ranked player from the West Coast Conference trailing only Daniel De Jonge of Pepperdine (No. 66) and Iiro Vasa of San Diego (No. 71). Pankin enters the final week of the regular season on a seven-match win streak. He is 22-9 overall, 13-5 in dual singles and 6-1 against WCC opponents.
The duo of Zelic and Pethybridge have had a phenomenal 2022-23 season that included reaching the Round of 16 at the ITA Fall National Championships after making the finals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. They are 23-7 overall and 11-2 at No. 1 doubles this spring.
Earlier this season the Pilot women's team also was nationally ranked for three weeks and rose as high as
No. 66 in the March 7 ITA Team Rankings.
The teams will conclude their regular season this weekend with WCC Championships qualifications on the line. The women host Gonzaga on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a must-win scenario for a chance to finish in the top six of the WCC standings based on ITA Ranking, while the men have already secured a top six finish but will look to defeat Gonzaga on the road Saturday at noon.
