PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's tennis has added Indiana graduate transfer Luka Vukovic to next year's roster, head coach Aaron Gross announced on Wednesday. Vukovic will utilize his final year of eligibility on The Bluff after a successful four-year stint against Big Ten competition.
"We are really excited to welcome Luka to our program," Gross said. "We have a tremendous amount of experience to replace after graduating three fifth-year seniors. I am excited about the develop of some of our younger guys and the potential for our incoming freshmen, but we really needed a steadying presence in the lineup. Luka played all throughout the lineup during his career in Indiana in singles and doubles and the Big Ten is one of the strongest tennis conferences. He recently clinched a big win for the Hoosiers in one of the last matches of the year at No. 2 singles."
Vukovic racked up 38 singles wins during his four years in Bloomington, Ind. and played most of his matches this past season at the No. 2 spot in the singles lineup. He went 11-9 in dual doubles matches this Spring. Prior to joining Indiana, Vukovic was a Canadian National Junior Champion in singles and doubles and represented Canada at the World Junior Tennis finals.
"I expect Luka to come right in and compete for spots in the top of the lineup in both singles and doubles," Gross added. "He is super committed to making the most of his last year of eligibility and giving himself a chance to play tennis beyond college and I am really looking forward to working with him."
Vukovic will join incoming freshmen
Stefan Skobelev and
Tannor Binder as newcomers to the 2023-24 roster. They will join returners Nicolas Ocana, Nikolas Tvedt, Oscar Brown, Maxim Groysman, Cade Fernando and Fabian Gusic.
The Pilots finished the 2023 season with a 12-10 record and reached the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Championships. Portland will lose three players that have been mainstays in the lineup over the last five years. Sema Pankin was named WCC Co-Player of the Year and was Portland's first four-time All-WCC honoree in singles. Eleftherios Neos graduates as one of only four players in program history to earn three All-WCC singles awards and was also an All-WCC doubles honoree three times, while Issa Yoshida won 56 singles and 62 doubles matches throughout his career.
