SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Portland Pilots Baseball had two student-athletes named to the 2023 Baseball WCC All-Academic Team, with catcher Nich Klemp and pitcher Nick Brink both making the squad. The Pilots also had several players earn honorable mention, including Ryan Rembisz, Ben Patacsil, Jake Tsukada, Spencer Scott, Evan Scavotto, Ty Saunders, Henry Muench, Briley Knight, Jake Holcroft, Brock Gillis, Joey Gartrell, Jack Folkins, Jacob Dobmeier and Peter Allegro.
The WCC All-Academic Team highlights athletes who succeeded both on and off the field. In order to qualify for the team, a student-athlete must be an important starter or reserve for their who holds a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher while playing in at least 50% of their team's contests. A pitcher must throw at least 10 innings for their team as well.
Klemp was one of the best players in the conference this year, making the All-WCC First Team after batting .390 with six home runs and 45 RBI's. He broke the school records this year for total hits (83) and doubles (25) and also posted the best batting average of any Pilot since 1991. Klemp's 25 doubles led the WCC and ranked fifth nationally, and he also led the conference in total hits while ranking second second in doubles per game (0.49) and third in batting average and hits per game (1.63).
Brink was one of the top pitchers in the conference this year, also making the All-WCC First Team this season. His 2.02 ERA ranked first in the WCC and was also seventh in the country, and he never allowed more than two runs in any game this season. He posted a perfect 6-0 record as well.
The Pilots are coming off another highly successful season, having made the WCC Tournament for the second season in a row and making the championship for the first time in program history. Portland finished the year with a 31-23 record to earn back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in program history.
