Portland Head Baseball Coach Loomis on the Extension and Athletic Department
"Portland has been my family's home now for nearly a decade and there is nowhere I would rather be. When I took over this program, it was with a goal in mind, and that was to surround myself with like-minded people who believed in the vision. People who hated to lose. People willing to work tirelessly to make sure this program made its name on the map nationally. I am grateful to have these student-athletes and assistant coaches in our program. Their like-minded growth mindset is what it's all about. I've also seen a lot of growth in this athletic department during my first eight years on The Bluff and I'm thrilled to continue to be a part of that. It starts at the top with Scott Leykam and the hardworking leaders he has on staff. I'd like to thank Scott, the administrators and staff that make the department function at a high level, and President Kelly for this vote of confidence."
Vice President of Athletics Scott Leykam on Loomis' Extension
"Coach Loomis has been an incredible asset to the University and UP Athletics, and we're excited to keep Geoff on The Bluff for years to come. Not only has Geoff elevated Pilot baseball on the field but he has helped the program make great strides in the classroom and the community as well."Â
Loomis has been crucial in rebuilding the Pilots into one of the top programs in the traditionally tough West Coast Conference. Loomis signed on as head coach of his alma mater back in 2015 after spending 13 years transforming the Pacific Lutheran Lutes into a national powerhouse at the NCAA Division III level. Since his first season in 2016, the Pilots have improved almost every season, jumping from 10 wins in 2017 to 23 in 2018 and building from there. The Pilots have won 174 games under Loomis, making him the fourth-winningest coach in program history.Â
The Pilots made the WCC Tournament under Loomis for the first time in program history back in 2022 and then made the tournament again this past season, advancing all the way to the championship game. The Pilots have also posted at least 30 wins in each of the past two seasons, including a program-record 17 conference wins in both seasons. It is the first time the Pilots have ever posted back-to-back seasons of 30 wins or more.Â
Loomis compiled a Hall of Fame playing career for Portland and still holds the school's career record for batting average at .376. Playing for the Pilots from 1990-92, Loomis earned Pacific-10 North Division Player of the Year honors in 1992 and All-Pac-10 North recognition in 1991 and 1992. His Pilot squad in 1991 was the last to make an NCAA Regional appearance, and up until this year he held the single season records for both hits (80) and doubles (22) in a season, set in 1992.Â
The Pilots are coming off a 31-23 season overall, finishing 17-10 in WCC play to finish second in the conference for the second year in a row. The Pilots qualified for the WCC Tournament for the second straight year and made the conference championship game for the first time in program history.Â
