LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – The Portland Pilots wrapped up the fall rowing season with one of the biggest events of year – the Head of the American, a regatta featuring the largest variety of opponents the Pilots they've faced this fall. The Pilots put up strong results in the collegiate pair and collegiate eight races, with three entries in each race.
The races featured several WCC opponents that the Pilots will face later in the spring, including Oregon State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Diego, Santa Clara and Washington State. The Pilots raced every WCC opponent except for the Creighton Bluejays this fall.
The pairs race saw 44 different entries across nine programs. The Pilots' three boats finished strong, with the highest finisher taking 22
nd. Julian Kiplinger and Sarah Redmond finished with a time of 21:24.4 to lead the Pilots. Kate Feustel and Aneta Sebokova took 35th with a time of 22:25.0 while Mina Miajlovic and Gaby Twitchell finished 38th with a time of 23:00.7.
The collegiate eights race saw 34 entries from 14 teams. The top finisher for the Pilots was the Portland A boat, coxswained by Leahbelle Paladino with Kate Feuestel as the stroke. That boat took 15th in the race with a time of 18:15.2. Portland C -- with Ania Fernandez as the coxswain and Molly Manfred as the stroke -- took 25th in the race with a time of 19:24.3. Portland B rounded out the eights for the Pilots, finishing 26th with a time of 19:44.7. Clarissa Gutierrez was the coxswain with Isabella Honig as the stroke.
"We had a really good and powerful row," Portland coxswain Paladino said of the race. "We walked through three crews within the first 2,000 meters, and held off charges two others down the stretch. All in all, we are very pleased with our performance and results."
The regatta marks the end of what has been a competitive fall season for the Pilots, who also raced in the Tail of the Lake and the Head of the Spokane earlier this month. See below for full results and lineups from today's regatta.
