PHOENIX, Ariz. – Portland men's tennis won five of seven singles matches and one doubles contest after day one of the Grand Canyon Invitational Friday at the GCU Tennis Facility. The mock dual format featured singles against Northern Arizona and doubles against the host Antelopes.
Nikola Keremedchiev, Stefan Skobelev, Tom Garcia and Cade Fernando each cruised in straight sets for the Pilots in singles action. Freshman Lucas Kimelman also pulled out a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 comeback win against Jakub Volesky, while Maxim Groysman dropped a close three-setter at the top of the lineup.
Kimelman and Garcia also teamed up for a 6-3 doubles victory earlier in the day.
The Pilots will continue action on Saturday and conclude play on Sunday. New Mexico is the fourth team participating in the event.
