SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Portland men's basketball forward Bol Dengdit has been named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week after averaging 11.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in helping the Pilots to a pair of victories.
The Melbourne, Australia native recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the team's 65-60 road win at Pacific on Thursday. Dengdit hit four clutch free throws late and grabbed some key rebounds to help secure the victory.
Dengdit then finished with 12 points and seven rebounds in Portland's 93-89 home win against Pepperdine on Saturday. He made an important three-pointer late to spurn a Waves rally and was an efficient 4-of-5 from the field in 33 minutes of action.
Overall, Dengdit shot 55 percent from the field and made 7-of-8 free throws in the two wins. He becomes the second Pilot this season to garner WCC Freshman of the Week honors. Tyler Harris has won the award three previous times.
Portland faces the top two teams in the WCC next week beginning with a road game against Northwest rival Gonzaga on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network. The Pilots then return home to face the Saint Mary's Gaels in a Saturday doubleheader at Chiles Center. The Pilot women face Pepperdine at 3 p.m. followed by the men's game at 5:30 p.m.
