PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland men's tennis has signed Lucas Kimelman to a National Letter of Intent, Pilots head coach Aaron Gross announced on Tuesday. The Toronto, Canada native will join Portland as a freshman for the 2024-25 season.
Kimelman has a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 11.12, was ranked as high as No. 937 earlier this year in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Rankings and is among the Top 20 players from Canada. He also reached the quarterfinals of 2023 Canadian National Junior Championships.
"We are really pleased to add Lucas to the squad for the fall of 2024," Gross said. "We have some big shoes to fill from graduation, with our top three players moving on. Our young guys – Stefan Skobelev, Tannor Binder, Cade Fernando and Nikola Keremedchiev – are poised to step up, and Max Groysman had a great end of the season, but we need to add some depth to the team and Lucas is a great start. His UTR rating is very good for his age and he is committed to playing pretty much nonstop throughout the summer to be ready to come in and compete for a spot. We are really excited to have him with us next fall."
Gross is losing four players from last year's roster to graduation but is expected to return five players with match experience. The Pilots finished the 2023-24 season with a 9-10 overall record and qualified for the WCC Tournament with a top six finish in the league standings.
