PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland Vice President of Athletics Scott Leykam has been named to the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee, the NCAA has announced. Leykam will serve a four-year term beginning on Sept. 1.
"I am incredibly honored to be selected for a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee," Leykam said. "College baseball has been incredibly impactful, and meaningful, to my career and I'm really excited about the chance to give back to the sport and be a part of one of the best championship experiences in our industry."
The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee is comprised of 10 administrators who are responsible for organizing and executing the 64-team Division I baseball tournament, including the selection and seeding of all teams. The committee also addresses policies and procedures for competition for each coming year.
Leykam recently finished a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Committee, including serving as chair during the 2022-23 academic year. Prior to that, Leykam spent six years as Chair of the West Coast Conference Basketball Cabinet and a four-year term with the NCAA Championships & Sports Management Cabinet.
Leykam's involvement in collegiate baseball dates to his time at Stanford University, where he served as the media relations director for baseball from 1996-99. During that time, Stanford made the NCAA Tournament each year and made two College World Series appearances. At the conference level, Leykam managed baseball during his time at the WCC Office from 2008-12 and oversaw the launch of the West Coast Conference's first ever double elimination championship.
During his tenure with the University of Portland, Leykam has overseen tremendous success across all sports, being named a 2022-23 NACDA Cushman & Wakefield Athletics Director of the Year. Within the last two years, the Pilots have also seen numerous improvements to current facilities as well as the opening of new ones. The University opened a brand new on-campus boat house – one of just two on-campus boathouses on the West Coast – last year as well as the Tom and Meg Names Family Foundation Beach Volleyball Courts earlier this year, both down on the Franz Campus by the Willamette River. The University of Portland also recently received a $5 million gift from the Chiles Foundation to be used for renovations to the Chiles Center, the home of Pilot Basketball and Volleyball, and a $1 million gift for student-athlete leadership and facility construction for UP Athletics.
Portland Pilots Baseball has seen vast improvement during Leykam's time on The Bluff. The Pilots are coming off back-to-back seasons of over 30 wins for the first time in program history and have clinched a spot in the WCC Tournament each of the last three seasons. The Pilots clinched their spot in the conference tournament for the first time in program history back in 2022. Leykam was also crucial in the renovation of Joe Etzel Field, which included the conversion from grass to artificial turf, lights, updated bullpens, a new press box, and grandstand.
