PORTLAND, Ore. -- Five Portland Pilots Baseball student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-Distrtict Team on Tuesday, with Nick Brink, Tanner Douglas, Carter Gaston, Ben Patacsil and Sam Stuhr all earning honors for District VIII.
In order to qualify for a CSC Academic All-Distrtict Team, a student-athlete must post at least a 3.50 GPA and participate in either 90% of a team's competitions or start in at least 66% of a team's games. Pitchers must also have made either 17 appearances or thrown 25 innings. They also must hold at least sophomore athletic and academic standing.
Brink makes the team for the second season in a row. He was as excellent on the field as off, throwing 99.2 innings with a 10-4 record and a 3.61 ERA. He threw 130 strikeouts, which was by far the most in the WCC, ranked sixth nationally and was the second most by any Pilot in a single season. An All-WCC First Team selection, Brink led the WCC in strikeouts, strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.65, 16th nationally), strikeouts per nine innings (11.74), WHIP (1.08) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.08). His 10 wins ranked second in the WCC and 12th nationally and he was the only WCC player to throw multiple complete games and the first Pilot since 2015 to throw multiple in a season.
Douglas was one of the top relievers in the conference and the nation, earning All-WCC Honorable Mention. He made a team-high 25 appearances, all in relief, and went a perfect 4-0 on the mound with a 3.32 ERA. His 10 saves led the WCC and ranked 14th nationally, and he's just the 10th Pilot to reach at least 10 saves in a season. He was also named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List earlier this year.
Gaston was the WCC Pitcher of the Year in 2024, becoming the second Pilot ever to win the award. He posted an astounding 11-2 record with a 3.01 ERA in 80.2 innings pitched, breaking a program record for wins in a season. His win total ranked fifth nationally and led the conference, and he also ranked first conference-wise in ERA (3.01), fourth in WHIP (1.18) and fifth in walks allowed per nine innings (2.45). He threw a complete-shutout earlier this year as well on May 17 against Saint Mary's.
Patacsil had one of the best bats in the west this year, batting a WCC-leading .384 to end the season. He posted career highs in batting average, total hits (68), home runs (seven) and RBI's (49) and also led the WCC in on-base percentage (.464). In just regular season conference play, he batted .524 -- over 100 points better than the next closest WCC batter -- while leading the conference in hits (44) and on-base percentage (.547) and was second in RBI's (35). He was an All-WCC First Team selection for the first time in his career this year.
Stuhr rounds out the CSC Academic All-Distrtict Honorees for the Pilots. An All-WCC Second Team selection, Stuhr went 3-2 on the mound with a 4.61 ERA in 80 innings pitched. He threw 100 strikeouts this year, being one of just two WCC pitchers to do so. He was also second in the conference in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.25 and was a two-time WCC Pitcher of the Week honoree.
It was an incredible year for the Pilots, who wen t37-19 overall and 19-5 in WCC play. Their 37 wins were the most they've posted in a single season and their 19 wins are the most they've ever had in WCC play and the most across any conference they've played in since 1980. They made the 2024 WCC Tournament Championship this year, advancing to the championship game for the second season in a row.
