SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Portland Pilots Women's Basketball's Lucy Cochrane has been named the West Coast Conference nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. This is the third year in a row a Pilot student-athlete has been nominated and the third year in a row a women's basketball player has been nominated.
The NCAA Woman of the year program honors the academic, athletic and community achievements of graduating female college athletes at all three divisions in NCAA. Nominated by their respective conferences, a student-athlete must have earned her undergraduate degree by Summer 2024 and have earned a varsity letter. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee identifies the Top 30 – 10 from each division – before picking three finalists from each Division, with the winner being selected during a luncheon at the NCAA Convention.
Cochrane has been a staple down low for the Pilots the last three seasons. A regular starter each of the last three years, she dominated defensively, leading the conference blocks each of the last three seasons. She is Portland's all-time leading shot blocker with 272 career blocks as a Pilot, finishing her career eighth among active players in career blocks. Cochrane was second in the nation in both total blocks (102) and blocks per game (3.09) this past season.
The Pilots were stellar on the court last season. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, the seventh time ever and third time in five years after winning the 2024 WCC Tournament Championship, also their third in five seasons. The Pilots finished with a 21-13 record overall, winning 20-plus games for the third seasons in a row, a first for the program since 1997.
