PEEK INTO THE PORT
- The Portland Pilots are back at .500 with a 94-58 rout of Long Beach State that puts them at 5-5 on the year.
- The Pilots earned their biggest win over a Division I team this season and also scored 63 points in the second half, breaking a program record for points in a half.
- Portland's 94 points are the most they've had in a Division I game that ended in regulation since 2019 and their 25 assists are the most in a Division I game they've posted this year.
- Three Pilots scored in double digits on the day, with Lainey Spear and Jada Kennedy scoring 14 points each to lead the way followed by 13 points from Julia Dalan.
- Spear and Kennedy both hit season highs with their performances, with Kennedy's point total also being a career high. Kennedy achieved the mark on a perfect 7-for-7 night.
- Dalan, meanwhile, posted her second double-double of the season, adding 12 rebounds and four blocks. She's the first Pilot freshman with multiple double-doubles since Alex Fowler in the 2019-20 season, and she's one of just 10 WCC players with multiple double-doubles this year.
- Dalan's four blocks marked the eighth time this season that she's had multiple blocks in a game. She has 36 denials on the year at 3.6 per game, with both her total and her average leading the nation.
- Dalan's 36 blocks are the most by any Pilot freshman since Rachel Warren in the 2005-06 season.
- With her stellar all-around performance, Dalan earned WCC Freshman of the Week honors for the first time this season. She's the first Pilot to win a weekly award.
- Portland leads the WCC in turnovers forced per game (22.0) and steals per game (11.4) and rank 29th and 44th nationally in the two categories. They also lead the conference in bench points per game (30.3) and assists per game (17.7) while ranking 20th and 29th nationally in those respective categories.
- Anchored by Dalan, their 6.4 blocks per game is tied for second in the conference but 11th nationally.
- Continuing the defensive excellence, Dyani Ananiev currently leads the WCC in steals per game (3.0) and ranks second in total steals (27). She is 33rd nationally in steals average.
- Ananiev is also the only Pilot averaging over 10 points a game this season at 10.1. Nine Pilots, however, are all averaging five points a game or more, with Ananiev followed closely behind by Florence Dallow (9.9) and Rhyan Mogel (9.4)
- Mogel is fourth in the conference in both assists per game (4.1) and assist/turnover ratio (1.68). She's had five assists or more in each of the last three games.
- The Pilots were picked to finish fourth in the WCC this season, with Dyani Ananiev named to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
- Ananiev played in just 10 games last season, averaging 7.4 points per contest along with 1.8 steals. She was a 2023-24 All-WCC Freshman Team selection.
- The Pilots return eight players from last year and add seven newcomers.
- Of the eight returners, none started a game last year. Rhyan Mogel and Lainey Spear are the only two players to have played in every game, with Mogel's 20.6 minutes leading all returning players.
- Florence Dallow, Natalie Fraley, Tiffany Barbosa, Ella Zimmerman and Caitlin Monahan also all return.
A LOOK BACK AT HISTORY
- The Pilots had a historic season in 2024-25, finishing 31-5 overall and 17-3 in WCC play to win a share of the 2024-25 WCC Regular Season Title. It's their fourth title, either tournament or regular season, in six seasons.
- Their 31 wins were a program record and their 17 wins in WCC play were also a new high for the program.
- Last year, they made the WCC Championships final for the fourth time under head coach Michael Meek and also qualified for the WBIT for the first time in program history.
- In the WBIT, they beat the Stanford Cardinal and the Seton Hall Pirates on the road to advance to the quarterfinals before falling to Villanova Wildcats in that round. The wins were the first ever road playoff wins for the Pilots, the first win ever over Stanford and the first ever over a Big East squad.
- Portland led the way in numerous statistical categories last season, leading the conference in points per game (75.7), scoring margin (12.4), steals per game (10.3), turnover margin (4.56), free throws made (16.44), free throw percentage (16.44), free throw attempts (21.08), assists per game (17.3) and assists-to-turnover ratio (1.16).
- Nationally, they were fifth in free throws made per game, 16th in free throw percentage, 21st in assists per game and free throw attempts, 34th in assist-to-turnover ratio and steals per game and 35th in points per game and turnovers forced per game (19.47).
- The Pilots set numerous program records at the Division I level, with the most points (2,726), points per game (75.7), field goals made (946), free throws made (592), free throw percentage (.780), rebounds (1,288), defensive rebounds (844), offensive rebounds (444) and assists (620).
MEEK AT THE HELM
- Michael Meek is in his seventh season as head coach of the Portland Pilots.
- Meek has been dominant through six seasons, winning WCC Tournament titles in 2020, 2023 and 2024 and the regular season title in the 2024-25 season.
- Meek has won at least 20 games in five of his six full seasons as head coach of the Pilots, including a program record 31 wins overall and 17 WCC wins in the 2024-25 seasons.
- Meek is 365-102 in his career dating back to his time at George Fox. He is 135-67 in his time with Portland.
- Meek ranks eighth among all active coaches in NCAA Division I with at least five seasons of experience in winning percentage at .782.
ABOUT THE DUCKS
- The Oregon Ducks are 11-1 this season, with their lone loss coming in their only Big Ten matchup this season against the No. 4 UCLA Bruins. Their 11 wins are tied for the second most in the country
- Last year, they went 20-12 overall and 10-8 in their first season in the Big Ten. They qualified for the 2025 NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round before falling to Duke.
- The last time the Ducks and the Pilots met, Portland came out on top with a resounding 91-60 victory. It was their biggest win ever over a Pac-12 school.
- Katie Fiso currently leads the Ducks in scoring at 15 points per game. Mia Jacobs follows closely behind at 14 points and Elisa Mevius averages 12.5 per contest.
- Kelly Graves is in his 12th season as head coach of the Ducks. Graves – a former assistant coach with the Pilots from 1992-97 – holds a 636-286 career record and a 254-124 record with just the Ducks.
