SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference announced on Monday that they will add conference championships in both men's and women's soccer starting in the 2026-27 academic year. The WCC will also add softball that same year.
"Following a thorough evaluation of each championship proposal, the membership was aligned in adding championship events in men's soccer, women's soccer and softball," West Coast Conference Commissioner Stu Jackson said via press release. "We look forward to hosting high-caliber championships and are excited for our programs to have the opportunity to compete for a title and secure the Conference's automatic qualification to their respective NCAA Championship."
The men's and women's soccer championships will feature the four highest seeds at the conclusion of the regular season, with the highest seed hosting each contest. There will be two semifinals matches and a championship, with the semifinals happening on Wednesday and the championship on Saturday preceding the NCAA selection day.
Each the year, the WCC is highly competitive in both men's and women's soccer, including a national title for the Santa Clara Broncos in 2020 on the women's side and four programs on the men's side making it at least to the third round of the tournament. On the men's side, the Portland Pilots won the WCC regular season title in 2016 and have made the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons and five times in eight fall seasons since Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt took over the program. They advanced to the quarterfinals in 2022 for the first time since 1995 and made it to the second round -- either by advancing or earning the first-round bye -- in three of the last four years. The women's side has a proud soccer history, having won two national titles in 2002 and 2005 respectively and having last made the NCAA Tournament back in 2022, advancing to the second round.
