SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland Pilots forward Joe Highfield was named the West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, winning the award for the first time this season. It's the third time a Pilot has won the award this year.
Highfield takes the honor after scoring in Portland's 3-2 win over the Denver Pioneers. Highfield's goal was his fifth of the year, putting him in a tie for first in the conference in goals and points (13). He's now scored 12 goals over his first two seasons of play, tied for the most by a Pilot in their first two seasons on The Bluff with Benji Michel in 2016-17.
Portland, who's ranked 4
th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, earned a big win over the Pioneers last Friday, improving to 6-0-1 on the season. It's their best start through seven games since the 1988 season, and they now hold a 17-game unbeaten streak that dates back to last season. It's the longest such streak for the Pilots since 1988 as well.
The Pilots open WCC play this week against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. It's also homecoming week here on The Bluff, with a pregame barbeque and tailgate taking place around 5 p.m. at the Chiles Center Plaza.
